How To Dress For Your Headshots

For anyone in the business world, a professional headshot is a must. You can use it on social media, on resumes, business cards, websites, branding materials and more. However, making sure that your headshot looks professional but still feels like you can be easier said than done. One major piece of that is what you wear, so as you’re thinking about what to wear for your professional headshot session, give these ideas some thoughts.

Avoid bold or crazy patterns

Even if your style is totally bold and crazy, avoid these patterns for your headshots. You don’t want your outfit to detract from your face which should be the focus of your photos. Big floral patterns, small herringbone patterns, and big bold stripes will all take away from you.

Go for jewel tones or dark colors

While bold patterns are bad, bold colors aren’t. I personally would stay away from neons and pastels, but jewel tones stand out well from any background. Dark colors are acceptable as well, but if you’re going dark, don’t go black because it can have a tendency to wash out your skin. Try navy instead.

Keep it simple

When it comes to accessories, simple is best. Lots of bling or huge scarves will only serve to detract from your face. Choose items that emphasizes you.

Don’t try to get fancy with your hair and makeup

Your headshots aren’t the time to try something new and cool with your hair and makeup because while it may look nice in the mirror, 9 times out of 10, you’ll get  your photos back and just won’t feel like it’s you. For these photos, stick with your daily hair and makeup routine.

Go for what looks like you

I love Pinterest as much as the next girl, but if you’re pinteresting your favorite headshot photos, make sure your vision aligns with who you are. If you’re not a pantsuit and stiletto type of woman, your jeans and converse are completely acceptable for your headshot. If you wear something you’re not comfortable in, that will show up in your photos, so just be you!   Looking for professional headshots? Let’s get in touch!
