Why Pinterest Isn’t Good For Your Family Photos

Pinterest is awesome. I love it. But it can add to a mom’s stress level if she’s trying to get her family photographs to look just like examples she found on Pinterest. Here’s why you need to let go of your Pinterest expectations for your next family photo session:

Your kid isn’t that Pinterest kid.

You’ve seen them: they’re perfect models. They never cry. They don’t know what a milk mustache is. Their picture perfect curls are never out of place. They’re those Pinterest perfect kids.   And here’s the deal: your kid isn’t one of them. That’s a good thing because childhood needs to be full of bedhead and milk faces and occasional tears. While your family photos may never look as “perfect” as the ones you find on Pinterest, they’re going to be perfect for your family because they will capture the uniqueness of your child, not some cookie cutter model.

Focusing on a certain pose will mean you miss other great shots.

Getting tied to one certain pose will take the joy out of the whole photo shoot. When you’re so focused on getting that one shot, you miss other shots that may fit your family better. And if we don’t get that one perfect pose you’re looking for, it may damper your excitement for the other really great ones we get.

What works for another family may not work for yours.

Some families are natural at posing. Others are much better at more candid photos. We won’t know what works for you until you get here (unless we’ve worked together before). Just because you found a few poses (or un-poses) you like on Pinterest, doesn’t mean they’ll work for your family. And that’s ok! We’re going to capture your family’s perfect – not someone else’s.

I’m not that Pinterest photographer.

Chances are, if you’re working with me, you’ve seen my work and you like what you’ve seen. While I’m always up for trying new things, I also have my own style which may be different from what you’ve seen of other photographers.

We can try our best to duplicate photos you love, but be open to other shots.

All of that said, I do really want to see ideas of photos you love. It gives me a good idea of what things to try and how to plan for your shoot. Just know that things may not go as Pinterest-planned as you want.   Ready to schedule your un-Pinterest perfect photo session? Call me!
