4 Simple Ways To Keep Kids Smiling During Photos

Kids are cute. They’re always giggling. They’re naturally photogenic. Until they’re on the floor kicking and screaming. And it never fails, they decide your family photo session is the perfect time for a tantrum! I’ve been around the block a few times with cranky kids, so here are my top four tips to keep your kids’ smiles on:

Bribery works wonders.

Maybe bribery isn’t the best parenting technique in the world, but when it comes to a family photo shoot, you can loosen your standards a bit. Promise rewards you know your kids will love, like their favorite candy or ice cream or even a small gift. Or hey, for some kids, a promise of a trip to the Dollar Store with a $5 bill will be enough to keep them smiling. Bribery won’t work well for very young children, but if they’re old enough, I’ve seen this trick work miracles.

Have some fun before the session.

If you’re racing around to get the kids picture perfect for your photo session and everyone is stressed out right from the beginning, they’ll only get more uptight once they’re here. Take some time in between getting ready and when you arrive to do something your kids will enjoy. It can be as simple as reading a favorite book together or singing silly songs on your way to the studio. Whatever it is, take some time to chill together as a family so everyone arrives already smiling.

Make sure those kids get their naps.

A rested child is (normally) a happy child. Let’s try to work together to work around your kiddo’s nap time so they come with plenty of sleep. If they’re sleepy and cranky, it will make both our jobs harder.   Another thing to consider is “Golden Hour.” This is the hour right before sunset when outdoor lighting is the best. I love taking photos during this hour, but in the summer, it can get pretty late for the kiddos. If you want to hit this prime time for lighting, let’s schedule your session in early spring or summer or later summer or fall – just not in the middle. If Golden Hour doesn’t matter so much to you, then we’ll schedule our session with what works best with your family’s schedule and mine.

Hungry bellies make for bad pictures.

I don’t know about you, but if I’m hungry, I’m not always fun to be around. So let’s not expect kids to be able to manage their attitudes without food. Before you come to your session, make sure your children have had their meal or snack, and don’t feel bad about bringing snacks with you to keep them happy. Just bring some wet wipes to wipe crumbs off their faces!   Ready to capture those (hopefully) sweet little faces? Book your photo session today!
